Young female binge drinkers at higher risk of depression
YOUNG women who regularly binge drink may be at a higher risk of depression, a new study has found.
The University of Newcastle study was based on data reported by about 8000 young people to the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health.
It looked at binge drinking patterns in young women aged 16-21 and 16% of women reported consuming five or more drinks more than once a week.
UoN researcher Jennifer Powers said the study showed women in that group were at a higher risk of depressive symptoms in the short and long term.
