IT STARTED out as a normal day for Erin Harbourne working at the Childers Hot Bread and Cake Shop.

But just before the 18-year-old's shift ended on Monday afternoon, her life changed forever.

Her boyfriend, apprentice baker Matthew Thurgood, 20, dressed in the suit he wore to Erin's prom last year, surprised her by holding a cardboard sign up to the bakery's window.

The sign asked Erin to marry him.

To the delight of passing pedestrians, customers and family members who gathered on the footpath to witness the occasion, Erin raced out of the shop to accept his proposal.

The young lovebirds met one year ago at the Apple Tree Creek Rodeo, where they shared an instant connection and have been inseparable since.

"I knew she was the one... we just knew each other from day dot," a nervous Matthew told the Town & Country moments before the proposal.

"She has a beautiful personality. She's really caring and always thinks about me first."

While he acknowledged they were young, he just couldn't wait any longer to be with his one and only.

"Erin is my one thing I live for: She's the one thing that keeps me going. I thought, I can't really lose that," he said.

While Matthew had a stressful morning planning the proposal, it all went smoothly.

"It was a bit of a hassle to get everyone ready ... I was stressing that she wasn't going to be there by the time I arrived," he said.

An elated Erin said she had no idea her boyfriend was going to propose.

"I dropped to the floor when I saw the sign and screamed a little and then ran out," she said.

"I never thought he'd be able to get away with something like that because I always thought I'd know if he was trying to sneak something.

"I'm just choked, I can't believe it."

The happy couple plan to marry in Fiji.
