You'll never guess what this chopper has been up to

A CHOPPER with a surprisingly rich history is bound for Germany from Toowoomba.

The RACQ LifeFlight chopper affectionately known as Oscar started its life as an experimental helicopter in the US before being re-purposed as a Popemobile.

Oscar was then moved to Australia in 1997 where it was used as a Rescue 500 chopper and finally as a CareFlight chopper from 2009.

LifeFlight engineer Michael Dopking said Oscar's time helping humanity still wasn't over.

Oscar was recently dismantled and packaged in shrink wrap to be shipped to Germany and re-purposed as a fire-fighting helicopter.

"Oscar has performed countless rescuers all over Queensland and many people probably owe their life to the aircraft and its crews," he said.

"You never know, Oscar may one day return to Australia but for now; auf wiedersehen Oscar."
