Worrall keen to get in the swing of things in South Africa

CRICKET: The conditions may not suit him but rookie Australian bowler Dan Worrall is accustomed to overcoming obstacles - or going around them.

The 25-year-old has a distinctive Malcolm Marshall-style angled run-up, which he perfected in his youth due to the positioning of a certain tree in his backyard in Melbourne's west.

The "classical” swing bowler, who took 44 wickets at 26.18 from nine Shield matches with South Australia last season, has been warned not to expect much movement with his deliveries ahead of his one-day international debut tomorrow night (AEST) against Ireland at Benoni, part of the South African Highveld, which is 2km above sea level.

"I don't know, if it's a rule that it doesn't swing up here then I'd like to change the rule,” a defiant Worrall told cricket.com.au.

"I'm coming over here with an open mind and to learn off the guys that I'm playing with ... if they've got certain information for me that will help then so be it.”

The Aussies will play the host nation in a five-game series following the one-off match with Ireland.

Swing or no swing, Worrall may get the chance for an easy kill on debut with minnow Ireland having struggled against the Proteas in their match.

Ireland was bowled out for just 148 after Temba Bavuma smacked 113 in a total of 5-354 for South Africa.

Worrall said he had been full of nervous excitement after he got the unexpected call-up for Australia.

"It's a surreal experience for me,” he said. "It's just been a whirlwind 12 months, but now that I'm here I've calmed down a bit.”
