Women unite for final league games

Under-15 women’s teams from Cherbourg and Hervey Bay will play Across The Waves, Wests, Easts and Brothers in a finalé gala day to end the inaugural women’s season tomorrow.

Across The Waves Sports Ground will be the venue, starting at 11am with under-15 Across The Waves against Wests.

The two teams have played each other all year and both coaches have been happy with the debut season.

“Considering we started the first season of girls’ rugby league off with only six players, I feel we have achieved much for the game and concept of girls playing rugby league by ending the season with 17 players,” Waves coach Nathan Brown said.

“The girls embraced the game with enthusiasm and have continued each week to improve their skills and gel as a team.”

“Hopefully next year will see more girls playing.”

Wests coach Mick Laybutt said it had been a tough season, but rewarding.

“I thank the girls for their hard work and great team efforts and will look forward to seeing them and new faces in the 2011 season,” he said.

It was a tough season, however the girls persisted and continued to play, making the first year a great one.
