Fast thinking bystander saves boys from attempted kidnap
PARENTS are urged to be vigilant after an attempted abduction of three young boys in East Bundaberg was foiled by a quick-thinking bystander when three East State School students who were approached by a car on the afternoon of March 10.
East State School principal Doug Ambrose said a stranger offered the boys a lift and he said it wasn't the first time the school had had similar reports.
"No, it's not the first time it's happened here - we've had incidences where cars have pulled up before," Mr Ambrose said.
"The pleasing part about this one was that people are still being vigilant late in the afternoon, because this one happened late in the afternoon at about 5.30pm.
"There were three little boys still in school uniform, it was at Skyring and Scotland St and a car pulled up beside them."
It was the quick thinking and action of another parent who thought the situation looked strange and intervened.
"A parent on the way home from a sporting event saw the event unfolding and took action," he said.
"She noticed what was happening and pulled her car alongside to see what was going on.
"The car took off and she told the three little boys to run home as quick as you possibly can - it could have been disastrous."
Mr Ambrose said after receiving a telephone call later that evening the school is reinforcing the message of stranger danger.
"We address stranger danger on parade and in the class room regularly," he said.
"I have found the best thing is to teach vigilance and be aware.
"It's not just anyone's responsibility to make sure our kids are safe - it's everyone's."
Tracey McAsey from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation said the foundation receives calls notifying of similar cases on a regular basis and the best thing to do is boost the three R's.
"We teach the three Rs - recognise, react and report," Ms McAsey said.
"Reinforcing with all children to recognise unsafe situations, react by not getting in the car and reporting it to an adult such as a teacher."
She said there was 'a large number of predators out there' and to be very mindful of that.
"These people who try to do this are very good at what they do, we mustn't forget that."
