Windy conditions dampen weekend

WEATHER: Feeling a bit like Groundhog Day as yet again we approach the weekend and yet again those onshore winds are expected to intensify through today and continue right across the weekend and into early next week.

Winds will be from the S/SE today from 15-25 knots before they turn more from the SE across both tomorrow and Sunday at 20-25 knots.

These winds should be a little lighter through the very early mornings, while coastal showers are also predicted across the weekend.

SWIMMING: Swimming conditions will not be great this weekend unless you hit the beaches through the very early mornings or else look for a beach that can offer significant protection from the prevailing SE winds.

Hervey Bay will be great for a swim as will be the southern pocket of Agnes Water beach, but the predicted wave increase could cause strong currents to be present at this location.

Locally, perhaps Nielson Park, Mon Repos or Moore Park could offer reasonable swimming conditions through the very early mornings while the winds are lighter and the tide higher, but these locations are unpatrolled so be careful.

The open and exposed beaches will get quite choppy and a little messy as the winds increase and there will also be a side current pushing along their length from right to left.

Please swim only at patrolled beaches, during patrol times and always between the red and yellow flags.

BEACH PATROLS: Today - 9am-5pm at Agnes Water only

Saturday & Sunday - 9am-5pm at Kelly's Beach & Agnes Water only

School Holidays - 9am-5pm at Kelly's Beach & Agnes Water only

SURFING: Local surfers were able to find a few small, but clean waves on our local beaches earlier in the week and things do look promising for a slight increase across the weekend, particularly later in the weekend and into early next week.

As the onshore winds increase the waves will become slightly wind effected, particularly on the open beaches, but we will see some fun-sized waves about around the half-metre size start to build through tomorrow and into Sunday and Monday.

Hit the beaches through the early mornings for best results or again from mid to late afternoon.

Spots such as Agnes Water, Nielson Park and Mon Repos will be the best.
