THE embrace said it all after the conclusion of the Bundaberg Cup.

After a tough week for trainer Phil Carter, with his son passing away on Friday, Wilby Dusty delivered a little bit of joy for the family as it stunned the field to take out the first big greyhound race of the year at Thabebean Park.

Not able to get to the track to the race, his daughter Melissa Carter instead attended and fought back tears as the dog secured the win.

Talking to the NewsMail she thought the race was over when Not Today Mate took the lead.

"He started not too bad," she said

"Then Not Today Mate got to the front we just thought 'that's it, all over."

The dog had other ideas though as it came down the front straight.

"Coming home, right at the end of the race, I thought he's got a chance, he's got a chance," she said.

"And I screamed, I just screamed for him."

In the end Wilby Dusty won by one and a half lengths with a time of 31.47.

It also broke the streak of Not Today Mate who was going for 11 straight wins in Bundaberg.

Instead it finished third behind Flash Houdini.

The win for Wilby Dusty continues a great year for the dog after it won the greyhound of the year in 2015.

Melissa added the dog was fantastic to the family.

"He's a good dog in the kennel," she said.

"He's an easy dog to train. Can't ask for anything better"

The win by Wilby Dusty capped of a great day of racing with seven other races held during the day.

Despite not having any success as a trainer in those events, president of the Bundaberg club Stephen Bland said the crowd was great.

. "There were a lot of new faces today which was pleasing to see," he said.

"Hopefully they will come again. Once they've seen it once a lot of people turn up again."

He added it was great to see Brothers Sports Club come on board as a sponsor.

The next event on the calendar will be the Easter Cup on March 26.
