Tennis players combine for win

TEAM 7 of Paul Meiers, Shirley Leacy, Sally Williams and Shanon Newton combined for a tough win over Team 1 in the finals of the Wide Bay Australia fixtures at Drinan Park.

Brett Leacy and Michelle Donley, of Team 1, started the night well, winning their first set against Williams and Meiers 6-2 but that pair turned the tables in the return set with a narrow win.

Newton was the only player to win all his sets, teaming successfully twice with Leacy and once with Meiers.

The match was so tight that after four of the six sets had been played, the two teams were level, but Team 7 won the last two sets and the match 31-26.

The new season of this competition kicks off tonight with a few changes in personnel and format.

The ten teams are divided into two pools because it is a short season and the winners of the pools will play off to decide the overall winners.

Both the Reserve grade matches in Ladies’ Midweek Fixtures at Rotary Park yesterday morning were very close, one of them resulting in a draw.

Team 2’s Bev Hart (R), Myrle Beddow and Sandra Cross shared the sets and the games with Team 4’s Nola Homann, Leanne Grogan (R) and Kerry Hodgkinson to finish 30-30.

Two of the six sets were decided by tie-break and to ensure that everything was shared equally, each team won one of the tie-break sets.

Team 1’s Ada Blacklock, Judy O’Donaghue and Jenny Dingle had a narrow 27-25 win over Judy Mason’s Team 5.

The Bundaberg Seniors club will be holding a club day this Sunday and visitors over 35 are invited to participate by simply turning up at Drinan Park at 1pm or contacting Alan on 4155 2448
