CRICKET: Wide Bay takes out U-17 McPherson Shield

CRICKET: ONE week after finishing bottom in the Under-19 O'Dea Shield, Wide Bay has bounced back with local Bundaberg players, to take out the Under-17 McPherson Shield in Gatton at the weekend.

Led by five Bundaberg players - Sam Pearson, Kye Leggett, Jayden Larsen, Dylan Sears and Joe Williams - Wide Bay won both matches last Saturday and Sunday to claim the crown.

In the opening match, against South-East Queensland, Wide Bay held on after being bowled out for 158.

Pearson, who made 22 not out, steered his team to what would be a winning total as the opposition fell short.

In reply, South-East Queensland made 8-156, with Pearson and Leggett getting one wicket each for Wide Bay.

The team would seal the title in the second match against Darling Downs and South-West Queensland with a great bowling performance.

Two wickets to Leggett restricted the opposition to 114, with Wide Bay scoring 209 in reply.

Twenty runs from Leggett, and 17 from Larsen, secured the team the title.

This weekend, in the Schaefer Shield, the Wide Bay open team will try to replicate the feat.

Five Bundaberg players have been selected with Chris Duff, Matt Gauld, Luke Owen, Joel Saunders and Callum Stitt involved in the event.
