What did and didn't do well at the box office in September

WELCOME to my new segment in which I discuss the monthly box office for September.

Please note that these are the numbers from October 1. These are the release dates from America.

Riddick

Riddick was made on a budget of $38 million, which is really low for a sci-fi and Vin Diesel film. Riddick has nearly tripled its budget and is the second grossing film in it's trilogy which concluded of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. The highest grossing in the trilogy was the second film, The Chronicles of Riddick, had an M rating which means more ticket sales, and a bigger gross.

Riddick budget: 38 million
Riddick worldwide gross: 85.7 million

Insidious: Chapter 2

Insidious: Chapter 2 is the second film this year from legendary horror director, James Wan. James Wan, this year, previously directed the creepy spirit flick The Conjuring (which is known to be one of the creepiest films of all time). The Conjuring had a budget of $20 million which is higher compared to Insidious: Chapter 2's $5 million. The Conjuring went on to gross $300 million dollars worldwide. Insidious: Chapter 2 has more star power than The Conjuring, which starred Vera Famiga and Patrick Wilson. Insidious: Chapter 2 stars popular comedy actress, Rose Byrne and James Wan regular, Patrick Wilson.  Insidious: Chapter 2 is yet to open in many countries including our own, but it isn't doing well in foreign markets making only 11% of it's worldwide gross.

Insidious: Chapter 2 budget: 5 million
Insidious: Chapter 2 worldwide gross: 78.6 million
Insidious: Chapter 2 opens on the 31st of October.

The Family

This Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfieffer flick that is produced by Martin Scorsese is yet to open in foreign markets, but has just surpassed its budget over in the US after opening three weeks ago. Comedy this year has been a week genre to be in as most comedies this year struggle to surpass their budgets (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Kick-Ass 2, 21 & Over). The Family is a gangster comedy starring Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfieffer and TV sensation Diana Agron… and why hasn't it made money? Because the trailers (from my perspective) weren't interesting enough, and didn't express what the film is about.

The Family budget: 30 million
The Family worldwide gross: 31.7 million
The Family opens on the 10th of October

Prisoners

Prisoners has an all star cast including Jake Gyllenhal, Terence Howard, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Marissa Bello, Paul Dano and my inspiration, Hugh Jackman. Prisoners is just shy of its 46 million budget though is yet to open in several countries including our own. Prisoners is a crime-thriller which focuses on kidnapping… Would this interest people? By the trailer it sets up it looks like it has a gorgeous style, a light and depressing musical score, the performances look fantastic (especially Jackman) but what I guess I am worried about is how they are going to express the story in a 153 minute thriller… Nonetheless, this is my second most anticipated film for the rest of the year.

Prisoners budget: 46 million
Prisoners worldwide gross: 44.8 million
Prisoners opens on the 17th of October

Rush

Rush stars Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and is directed by Ron Howard. Rush is certainly going to make its money back. It had a mediocre opening in the US this weekend and a higher opening in foreign markets ($13 million). What does this mean for Thor? Has Chris Hemsworth developed these poor numbers? It means nothing… Rush has been advertised poorly, so I wouldn't be blaming stars Chris Hemworth and Olivia Wilde. Rush is a race-car film which is based on a true story… True stories do amazingly at the box office… right?

Rush budget: $38 million
Rush worldwide gross: $23.3 million (opening weekend)
Rush opens on the 3rd of October

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Sony Animation have had a good year… Unfortunately, The Smurfs 2 made money… Lots of money. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a wonderful film… Did it need a sequel? No… it didn't… at all. In fact, I am really angered that they have made this film. Most of the new characters seem annoying. As for box office, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 had a low opening (for animation) this year, with a 34 million dollar opening… Not bad… if it wasn't an animated movie. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2's projections where north of 40 million, and it didn't make it.  Animations this year have been opening (in ths USA) to 45-90 million… Then there's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2's 35 million.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 budget: $78 million.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 worldwide gross: $34 million.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opens on the 28th of November.

My opening weekend projections for October:

  • Gravity - 40 million
  • Runner Runner - 15 million
  • Romeo and Juliet - 5.5 million
  • Captain Phillips - 25 million
  • Machete Kills - 10 million
  • Carrie - 27 million
  • Escape Plan - 11 million
  • The Counselor - 17 million
  • Bad Grandpa - 12 million
