Wellcamp Airport breaks new ground: 10,000 in the skies

THE month isn't over yet but Wellcamp Airport has reached a major milestone in September with a record number of people taking off from and arriving in Toowoomba.

The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers helped the airport record its busiest month on record, with 10,000 passenger movements throughout September.

Flights from Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney had been jam-packed in the lead-up to this year's flower festival as new visitors from across the country experienced the Toowoomba region's most vibrant time of year - many for the first time.

With more than 22,000 inbound seats now on offer annually, a 1631% increase on previous years, Toowoomba has experienced strong growth in interstate visitation but has plenty of room for future tourism growth.

This comes as no surprise to travel writer Sarah Megginson, who in July 2016 encouraged flower lovers to spring for a trip to Toowoomba's Carnival of Flowers over Canberra's Floriade.

"Floriade is still a sensational event, but we think the Carnival of Flowers may just hold the trump card," Ms Megginson said.

"Canberra may lay claim to being the Nation's Capital, but Toowoomba rightly holds the title of Australia's Garden City."
