Deb Knight’s new prime time role

DEB Knight has confirmed she's taking on a new prime time role at Nine, after weeks of filling in for former Today host Lisa Wilkinson.

Following news Karl Stefanovic's co-host had abruptly quit to join The Project in October, the popular newsreader was given the last-minute call up, and has been covering the position ever since.

While Knight will be vacating the host's chair next year to make way for Georgie Gardner, it's been announced she'll be busy with an expanded role across the Nine Network's prime time slots.

Nine has revealed she'll be presenting the 6pm news bulletin in Sydney on Friday and Saturday nights, while also acting as a fill-in for regular weekday host Peter Overton.

She'll also fill in for new Today host Georgie Gardner and Today Extra host Sonia Kruger, as well as become an occasional reporter for A Current Affair.

While announcing her new role on the Today show, Deb said: "It'll be great, a really exciting time, moving into prime time ... I'm looking forward to 2018."

However, the change means the end of Knight's six-year run as host of Weekend Today, a job she's held since first joining Nine in December 2011.

"I've been involved with Weekend Today from day dot. It's a great show - I've loved it," she told 9Honey, but added that she's looking forward to the challenge of a new role.

"I always do love showing the diversity of my range. I like having the ability to do different roles and thankfully within Channel Nine there's plenty of scope to do that."
