Weekend of rain not enough for region's farmers

DESPITE a weekend of rain, farmers say more is needed to help counter the impact of the dry start to the year.

Lockyer Valley Growers president and farmer Michael Sippel said despite it appearing like it had rained a lot, most farmers he spoke with had received only about 30mm across the weekend.

"Two hot days and we won't even know it rained," he said.

"It will have a little bit of an impact on a few pumpkins, but that's it.

"It might even green the grass up for the few days, but we want decent rain."

Mr Sippel said the rain was not the "big saviour" farmers had hoped for.

"It will be nice on the black soil as the rain will help melt it down a bit, so it's easier to work the ground again, but it certainly hasn't put any water in underground aquifers," he said.

"It might solve a few problems, but the creeks are still dry."

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Mark Trenorden said Toowoomba residents could expect mostly fine conditions for the rest of this week.

"There will be some isolated showers across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday," Mr Trenorden said.

"By the time you get to Friday it will just be fine.

"It will be about 26 degrees for the next three days before warming up a little bit on Friday."

He said like the Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba received about 30mm of rain across the weekend.

"It varies a little bit from spot to spot," he said.
