WBO to rescore Pacquiao vs Horn fight
THE World Boxing Organisation has announced it will rescore the controversial Manny Pacquiao vs Jeff Horn fight, even though it can't change the result.
Horn, a former Brisbane school teacher, beat Pacquiao in a unanimous 12-round decision from the judges.
The Phillipines Games and Amusement Board made a complaint to the WBO, backed by a disappointed Pacquiao, on July 3.
The WBO wrote back on July 6, local time, to announce it would appoint five anonymous judges from different countries to watch the fight again.
"The purpose of this review is to be able to give the fans certainty of who was the winner of the bout, even though we do not have the power to reverse the decision of the Judges based on discretion and, in this case, we do have a rematch clause on the fight contract," the letter said.
"The World Boxing Organization does not have jurisdiction in the first instance to revoke any decision, as that would correspond to the Australian National Boxing Federation."
As the welterweight champion, Pacquiao was the favourite to beat Horn in the match dubbed the Battle of Brisbane.
Horn's win made him the new welterweight boxing champion, a title he celebrated during a tickertape parade through the streets of Brisbane on Thursday.
