Waves dump Bears to play with Dogs
ACROSS The Waves produced a stunning third quarter to advance to a preliminary final against Brothers Bulldogs by defeating the Maryborough Bears 150-46 in the Bundaberg Wide Bay AFL on Sunday.
The margin was 46 points at half-time and the Waves booted seven goals and restricted Maryborough to just two behinds to put the final scoreline beyond doubt.
Shaun Stone made a terrific return form injury to kick six goals and the supply of power of the Waves midfield was too much for the Bears to handle.
Across The Waves coach John Williams said Mary- borough did not field the team he expected.
He is now concentrating on their next match.
"Maryborough had a few out and when we started they really had a go," Williams said.
"It was a good run for my boys and we got to rest some players at the end. It is going to be a good game against Brothers this weekend to see who plays the Bombers in the grand final."
Williams was impressed with his older players, saying the contribution they made around the ground was invaluable.
"Darren Ey, Ronny Blair and Paul Welsh played well on Sunday. It was good to see Shaun Stone kick a few goals as well," he said.
"Because we were so dominant, we played most of the last quarter with 17 players on the field - which is when they kicked a couple of goals."
ATW will host Brothers Bulldogs in the preliminary-final at Frank Coulthard Oval on Saturday to determine who takes on the Bombers in the grand final on September 8.
