Waves crash feeble Norths
LEFT-ARM seamer Mitchell Waters hit the jackpot, bagging six wickets as Across The Waves (ATW) annihilated Norths in their NewsMail Cup Division 1 penultimate round clash on Saturday.
But while ATW maintained their unbeaten record against Bundaberg teams this season, Brothers consolidated second place by staging a superb run chase to overhaul Country/Wests' imposing 9-238 total with seven wickets in hand and six overs to spare.
After an injury ruined last season, Waters has established himself in top grade this season and continued his good form at the weekend.
Norths were coming off their first premiership win since their return to top grade last season but they made a bad start with former long-serving ATW champion Lachlan Donovan caught by captain/coach David Jones off the bowling of Matt Gavin on the fourth ball of the innings.
Brendan Prossliner then removed Shaun Rose. Waters came on as second change and he conceded three fours off his first two overs as Norths clawed their way to 2-40, but he then found his range, claiming 6-4 in the space of 13 balls to cut a swathe of destruction through the innings.
Trent Prossliner also chipped in with a wicket, before Chris Duff delivered the last rites to send Norths packing for 63.
ATW openers Sean Stuchbery and Callum Stitt took just eight overs to race past their target, with Stuchbery putting the icing on his 31st birthday cake by lifting a ball on to the top of the NewsMail Pavilion with one of two successive sixes - and it did not come down.
Country recovered from 3-61 to rack up their biggest total of the season, although it could have been more if No. 3 Steve Nichols had not been tragically run out two runs short of a century.
But they were again unable to defend the total, slumping to their seventh straight loss with opener David Turich leading the Brothers run chase with 73.
Turich's older brother, Matt, and captain David Boge then plundered 112 runs off just 11 overs to finish the job in stunning style.
ATW 0-67 (Sean Stuchbery 38no, Callum Stitt 24no) d Norths 63 (Mitchell Waters 6-1-17-6); Brothers 3-245 (David Turich 73, David Boge 61no, Matt Turich 49no, Josh McLean 31, Paul Stumer 9-1-42-2) d Country/Wests 9-238 (Steve Nichols 98, Daniel Faulkner 30, Matt Turich 9-1-61-3, Ian Botha 9-1-28-2).
