Warning over fee refund scammers

A NEW phone scam offering bogus refunds for bank fees is doing the rounds of the Sunshine Coast.

The Daily is aware of at least three people who have received calls recently asking them to confirm their bank details.

In each case the recipient was told that his or her bank had charged too much in fees and they were due a refund.

A Palmwoods woman, who asked not to be named, said she received a call on Wednesday about a supposed refund.

She said the person indicated they were calling on behalf of the government and she was due a refund of $3647 in bank fees.

The caller told her she could have the money within a couple of hours if she could confirm her details.

"I straight away thought this was a bit queer," she said.

She said the caller seemed to have an Asian accent and a "delay" effect on the line sounded like the caller was calling from overseas.

However, the caller gave her a name and New South Wales phone number to ring and a reference number.

When the Daily rang the number yesterday afternoon there was no answer.

The woman said she believed the scammers were deliberately preying on people at a time of year when most people were short of time and cash and might act without thinking.

"They gave all the numbers to make it sound legitimate," she said.

Consumer advocates have issued warnings in recent years about telephone scams regarding over-charged bank fees.

"If in doubt about the identity of a caller, request their name and contact number to call them back," the bank said in the alert.
