Wallaroos into second sudden-death final

IT IS arguably the most important Fraser Coast derby in recent time.

Wallaroos will face heavily-fancied rivals Hervey Bay for a place in the Bundaberg Rugby League grand final.

The Maryborough club trounced Waves Tigers 42-10 in the minor semi-final, ending last year's grand finalist's season and setting up a salivating regional derby.

The Fraser Coast clubs will clash a week earlier than some local fans hoped, but Wallaroos coach Peter Waters believes this could be one of Queensland's most successful club's time to shine.

Recent history is against the blue-and-whites: they have not beaten Hervey Bay in their last six games.

"It's been two seasons, but every game has been tight,” Waters said. "I fancy our chances this week.”

Their minor semi-final win was built on the back of the side's opening 10 minutes. Wallaroos muscled up in defence, they found gaps in attack and allowed their top-class backline space.

Dylan McCrae scored two tries outside joint BRL Player of the Year and leading try-scorer Shaun Collins, in what the young flyer's first game since he suffered a broken hand in a three-try debut against Past Brothers.

"Ben Turn was standout, again, and Brandon Law was absolutely outstanding at right centre,” Waters said. "(Halfback) Luke Waters made more tackles in that game than he has all season.

"I was most happiest with the defence which kept Waves to four points for about 75 minutes. They aimed up, and stopped their roll down the middle.”

Fullback Joey Alberts suffered a dislocated shoulder but the custodian is the only immediate injury concern.

"We won't change anything at training this week. If we match them in the forwards I think our backline can get them.”
