Wallaroos fans have waited almost 3000 days for a BRL Grand Final
THE weekend for which Wallaroos' players, officials and fans have waited almost 3000 days for is finally here.
The Maryborough club will face Past Brothers in the Bundaberg Rugby League A-grade grand final at Salter Oval tomorrow, and halfback Luke Waters cannot wait.
"I'm a bit nervous now but I'm feeling pretty confident," Waters told the Chronicle.
Wallaroos finished third on the BRL ladder, and eliminated Waves Tigers and Hervey Bay Seagulls in consecutive weeks to qualify for the grand final.
The players will have to defy history to lift their first BRL premiership since 2009.
That triumph, a 40-38 win against Past Brothers, was a long, 2926 days ago.
Wallaroos has beaten Past Brothers only once since then - 1234 days ago in an Anzac Day match 2014.
The premiership-winning coach and captain from 2009, Colin Scott and Todd Campbell, have thrown their full support behind the team.
Campbell has two reasons to wish for success, as the under-18s team he coaches will play Past Brothers in their grand final at 11am.
"The atmosphere feels the same (as 2009) leading up to it," Campbell said.
Scott praised coach Peter Waters' decision to stick to local players.
Peter's locals- first approach was mocked by rivals, but he has steered the club to an A-grade grand final within two years.
"When I was helping last year Peter was adamant about bringing the club's junior players through the ranks and it's paid off," Scott said. "He's stuck to the kids from Maryborough and given them a chance to make history."
Second-rower Ben Turner said the qualifying final win against Waves two weeks ago was the turning point: it was the moment the players believed they had a genuine opportunity to win the title.
Long-term fans like Julie Walker will decorate the Bruce Highway with blue and white streamers, and along with several bus-loads of fans will be in full voice when the game kicks off at 3.30pm tomorrow.
Maryborough Brothers will defend its reserve grade title in the 12.30pm game.
