Vouchers helping more kids get active

LOCAL families are now finding it easier to get active, thanks to the Queensland Government's Get Started program.

Get Started provides kids who can least afford joining a sport or recreation club with vouchers of up to $150 to help with club membership and/or participation fees.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said he was pleased to hear the latest round of funding had seen 331 vouchers issued in the Burnett electorate.

"It's great to see so many local kids being given the opportunity to get out and be active and social, which they may not have been able to do without this important program," he said.

Mr Bennett said state-wide, the latest round of the Get Started program would help more than 13,500 children join a sport or recreation club state-wide.

"Round four of Get Started has seen a great response, with demand similar to that of last year's corresponding round," he said.

Mr Bennett said more than 38 per cent of applicants who received a voucher said they had not played club sport previously, which is exactly what the government is trying to achieve through this program-to increase participation.

Recreation and Sport Minister Steve Dickson said the Queensland Government was keen to encourage more Queenslanders to get involved in sport and recreation.

"Over the last two years, more than 65,000 vouchers Get Started have been issued, and more than 70 per cent have gone to Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card holders, which is where assistance is needed most" Mr Dickson said.

"We have also received an enormous response from clubs with more than 3500 clubs now registered with the program, and athletics, gymnastics, swimming and rugby league clubs have proven the most popular under this round" he said.

"We made an election commitment to get more young Queenslanders involved in recreation and sport, and we are delivering through this highly successful program.

"Round five opens in February next year I strongly encourage all Queensland sport and recreation clubs to get involved."

Successful applicants must ensure vouchers are redeemed at a Get Started registered clubs by  November 15 this year.

Registered clubs must redeem the vouchers by November 30.
