Volunteers flood in to Fernvale after storm

THE Somerset community has united to help residents impacted by the supercell storm that lashed parts of the region on Tuesday afternoon.

A number of agencies, volunteers, residents and businesses have come together to respond to, manage and coordinate the clean-up and recovery process.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the community generosity was highlighted in the help given by a Fijian Football team who were staying in Somerset.

There was also a combined barbecue put on by Booval and Ipswich Bunnings and the Lowood and Fernvale Lions to cater for volunteers assisting in removal of storm debris.

"Our community is tough, resilient, compassionate and generous and together we will get through this," Cr Lehmann said.

"Responding to this event has certainly been a coordinated effort by various levels of government, emergency services personnel, volunteers, residents, businesses and more.

"The teamwork and coordination displayed by those working from the incident command centre at Fernvale Futures - that was established almost immediately following the storm - was outstanding and an integral part of responding to this disaster.

"The assistance being offered by the broader Somerset community has also been overwhelming and I would like to thank everyone for thinking of our community and the residents impacted by this event in their time of need."

The Department of Communities will have staff stationed at the Fernvale Futures Complex each weekday until November 6 between 10am and midday to assist residents experiencing any hardship or in need of crisis support.
