Virgin may want Bundy airport

BUNDABERG is still on the list as a possible destination as Virgin Blue considers adding more regional Queensland cities to its timetable.

Virgin Blue spokeswoman Amanda Bolger said yesterday the airline was looking at flying into Emerald and Gladstone, as both cities’ airports undergo significant upgrades.

But with the Bundaberg airport undergoing its own $5.2 million upgrade, Ms Bolger said Virgin Blue was looking at new sites all over Australia.

“Bundaberg is still on the list. We haven’t made any decision yet,” she said.

“But I know our evaluation team has had discussions with Bundaberg.”

At present Qantaslink is the only commercial carrier flying into and out of Bundaberg.

Ms Bolger said at the moment Virgin Blue was in the process of identifying a number of possible destinations around Australia.

But she said she had no idea when a decision would be made.

“There is no timeline on that as yet,” she said.

Bundaberg Regional Council economic development manager Naomi Searle said the airport upgrade was nearing completion.

“We estimate by the end of January it will be finished,” she said.
