Velaphi call up boosts Mitch

PERTH Glory goalkeeper Tando Velaphi’s selection in the Australian squad for last night’s Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait has given Melbourne Victory custodian Mitch Langerak’s national aspirations a boost.

The former Bundaberg keeper has performed strongly for his club since earning a start six rounds ago.

He says the selection of 22-year-old Velaphi in the national team only improved his chances of wearing the green and gold.

“It’s promising to see they are prepared to look at a young guy like Tando for the top side,” Langerak, 21, said.

Langerak is preparing for Sunday’s game with the Newcastle Jets.

The defending champions sit in second spot, three points from leaders Sydney, with seven rounds left.
