Unheralded Titan ruled out for the season

GOLD Coast forward Ryan Simpkins may have played his last game for the Titans after being ruled out for the rest of the NRL season.

Simpkins ruptured his ACL in the remarkable win over Melbourne last week and the 28-year-old's contract at the Gold Coast ends this year.

The lock has now had ACL ruptures in both knees and with a number of young forwards coming through, it is unlikely he will keep his place at the club next season.

Titans captain Ryan James says they will miss Simpkins.

"People see his name in the program and they don't see much of it, but he's the glue that holds us together in the forward pack,” the skipper said.

"He was carrying a couple of injuries this year but still playing great footy.

"It's really disappointing his season ended during his 50th game ... not many footballers make it to that milestone.”

The Titans could also be without the services of utility back Dan Sarginson, who is likely to require surgery on his dislocated shoulder he hurt last week.

The Englishman will be out for the remainder of the campaign if he does require an operation.

Both will be missed in Saturday night's clash with Manly at Cbus Stadium but Jarryd Hayne returns after overcoming his own knee problems.

Now it seems Hayne only needs to get through the clash with the Sea Eagles to secure selection for the opening State of Origin match with Queensland on May 31 at Suncorp Stadium.

Hayne has been in good form after recovering from an ankle injury in round eight and the 29-year-old looks likely to be named in Laurie Daley's squad on Monday night despite making the switch from fullback to centre.

If he does make the squad it will be is his first Origin appearance in two years.

Titans coach Neil Henry has no doubt the move to the centres has not damaged Hayne's Origin chances.

"He's held his own playing in the centres, he's certainly adaptable enough to play in the centres or elsewhere for New South Wales,” he said.

The Titans only had one win in the first seven rounds but have turned things around since Hayne's return, winning three matches on the trot.

Manly has its own injury problems with fullback Tom Trbojevic likely to be missing for six to eight weeks with ankle and knee injuries picked up in last week's defeat to the Broncos.

The Sea Eagles will miss Trbojevic as he leads the NRL in line breaks with 13 for the season and has registered the most metres by a fullback this year.
