UN head welcomes replacement
UNITED Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the choice of former Portuguese prime minister Antonio Guterres (pictured) as his successor. "I know Guterres very well and consider it a super choice,” Mr Ban said. The General Assembly is likely to meet next week to approve the appointment of Mr Guterres, 67, for five years from January 1. Mr Ban, 72, of South Korea will step down after serving two terms. Mr Guterres is multilingual and highly qualified. There has never been a female secretary-general, nor an Eastern European one.
