Traffic gridlock: Sunshine Coast's worst roads named

SUNSHINE Coast drivers have made their traffic gridlock frustrations clear, with the region's most troublesome motorway named the ninth worst road in Queensland.

The RACQ has called on the Queensland Government to urgently fix the Coast's problem roads as it released results of a survey of motorists naming and shaming regular gridlock locations in the Red Spot Congestion Survey.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said the survey had identified three major Coast roads that left drivers most frustrated.

Respondents rated the Sunshine Motorway as the most troublesome road in the region, followed by the Nambour Connection Rd and Caloundra Rd.

"We asked motorists throughout Queensland to pinpoint the exact locations that had bumper to bumper traffic and led to frustration behind the wheel," Ms Smith said.

"These 'red spots' could be the result of not enough lanes, ill-sequenced traffic lights or delays at level crossings.

"Not only was the Sunshine Coast Motorway identified as a problem location on the Coast, it received so many nominations, it came in as the ninth worst in the state."

Ms Smith said an upgrade for the roads was long overdue.

"Enough talk - it's time Sunshine Coast motorists saw some action," she said.

"We'll be using the results of this survey to better inform our policy positions and continue to lobby both local and state governments to come up with solutions to these bottlenecked areas."

Sunshine Coast's worst roads according to Red Spot Congestion Survey:

  • Sunshine Motorway at Sippy Downs and Mooloolaba interchanges
  • Caloundra Rd at roundabout with Nicklin Way, Caloundra
  • Nambour Connection Rd at intersection of Bruce Highway
