Townsville doctor accused of ‘horrific’ rapes

A TOWNSVILLE doctor has been charged with "horrific offences of rape" and attempting to intimidate a witness out of giving evidence in a criminal matter.

The man was arrested and charged today with eight counts of rape and perverting the course of justice.

The man cannot be named for legal reasons.

Police will allege one of the rapes was committed against a patient of his inside a medical clinic.

Townsville Child Protection Investigation Unit detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles said the doctor targeted vulnerable people and it was likely there were more victims.

"Our investigation has identified that there was a particular pattern he certainly had vulnerable people come to his practice," Sen-Sgt Miles said.

"As disturbing as it is to say I believe that there are other victims out there.

"I believe that this individual has been involved in significant breaches of trust through his medical practice and I am sure there will be victims out there who will be seeing this today and thinking it may well be appropriate to come forward and speak to (police) and I would encourage them to do so at any time."

Sen-Sgt Miles said police would allege the rapes were particularly disturbing and involved penetration with objects.

"We will also be alleging they were fairly horrific offences of rape," he said.

"This investigation has been running conjointly with other matters that the Office of the Health Ombudsmen and also the Townsville Criminal Investigation Branch have been running over the last 18 months.

"It's been a long investigation and we have finally reached the point of which we have sufficient evidence to support those charges."

Police will allege the seven rape charged charges relating to the man's former partner occurred in 2016 and 2017, while the offence allegedly committed against a patient was from 2012.

The man will front Townsville Magistrates Court tomorrow where police will oppose bail.
