SMALL tornadoes were spotted across the Darling Downs yesterday as severe storms left rain and hail.

Highfields woman Nicole Jenkins spotted what weather watchers call a weak tornado near Cawdor Rd yesterday about 4pm.

She said she didn't know what was going on at first.

"I spotted it, turned off and took a few photos.

"I watched it start to spin and then it disappeared."

She said she'd never seen anything like it before.

A water spout, which is similar to a tornado, was also spotted near Dalby yesterday.

It wasn't the only wild weather in the region with residents in Charleville reporting hail.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Chris Joseph said weak tornadoes and water spouts were not uncommon.

The vortexes are caused by clouds rotating during severe super cells.

"We do see tornado signatures on the radar but it's difficult to tell if it's a tornado without having someone there on the ground," he said.

Water spouts form over bodies of water and tornadoes over land.

Mr Joseph said they had the potential to cause damage.

He said there had been reports of damage from a tornado at Caboolture in recent days.
