Toowoomba home to best plastic surgeon
AN international judging panel has named a Toowoomba plastic surgeon as the best in his field.
Dr Mark Magnusson was recognised at the My Face My Body Awards in Sydney where he received the award for Best Plastic Surgeon.
Dr Magnusson has been in Toowoomba for the past 17 years and most recently started working at the Gold Coast. He is the director of Toowoomba Plastic Surgery and Allure Clinic and woks at the Esteem Medi Spa at the coast.
"It is a nice honour to be recognised by the judging panel in that way but at the same time I have a lot of very skilled colleagues and I wouldn't be choosing to put myself above them," Dr Magnusson said.
He said the judges looked at factors such as experience, credentials and contributions to the industry. Dr Magusson believed his contributions to education may have given him an edge.
He was involved in the recent push to elevate industry standards in cosmetic surgery, is president of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and is a researcher and educator contributing to local and international meetings.
"Basically I wanted to make sure what I am doing is still appropriate and at the leading edge of what we are doing," he said.
"What started as self education has gone beyond that."
He said he wanted to be a spokesman for society and pushed for a clear understanding of what the difference were between practitioners, particularly between a cosmetic surgeon and plastic surgeon, which is what Dr Magnusson completed further study to do.
Dr Magnusson said, while it sounded corny, he loved being able to help people.
"It is very creative what I do. I couldn't imagine doing any other part of medicine," he said.
"Every patient is slightly different. You have to think about what you are going to do for an individual, be creative and thoughtful and for the right person you can create changes that improve their quality of life."
Dr Magusson said much of his work was to do with breast, body and facial surgery. However he had a busy non-surgical clinic as well.
"What we see is trends in things like, breast enlargement," he said.
"Eight years ago a lot of people wanted big breasts and it wasn't necessarily a good thing.
"But now there is a much greater emphasis on shape and proportion. Not necessarily a change in the procedures but you get change in influence of trends and what people's goals are."
Dr Magnusson said there was three things that drove him in his work.
"I really enjoy plastic surgery, I am passionate about patient safety and about education," he said.
