To be or not to be Bundy mayor

BUNDABERG man Reid Schirmer has told the NewsMail he will consider standing as a candidate for mayor if a majority of the community agrees with a proposal he has put forward.Mr Schirmer wants to turn the CBD area into a walk-through mall, similar to that of the Queen St Mall in Brisbane.

"A mall in the main street would create new jobs and excellent investment opportunities for small businesses centred around tourism," he said.

"A carnival atmosphere of live music, street performers and markets with stall holders on Friday nights would bring the city to life after daytime trading hours."

Big on tourism and keeping things sustainable and environmentally friendly, Mr Schirmer said the mall area, from Targo to Barolin Sts, would be rid of the parking spaces with alternate travel options to be considered.

"My idea is to bring forward more ways to use better public transport, like shuttle services to and from the mall," he said.

"A reduction in traffic congestion and pollution in the main centre of Bundaberg would have significant health benefits.

"A mall would provide cleaner air space for people to enjoy shopping and dining and Bundaberg residents would have an attractive alternative to driving their car to the centre of the city."

This isn't the first time Mr Schirmer has dabbled in local politics.

In 2013 he ran as an independent candidate in the federal election which saw Keith Pitt win the seat of Hinkler.

Mr Schirmer said he wanted to find out first-hand as to whether his proposal was wanted by the Bundaberg community before deciding to run for mayor.

"I want to get people talking about it," he said.

"I want to find out if this is something the people really want. "I think it will be a fantastic opportunity to boost our tourism.

"Locals will also have the opportunity to enjoy the open space and it will create more jobs in the region.

"It will also provide the chance for locals to enjoy something after business hours."
