Thunderstorm warning for southeast

THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstrom warning for Southeast Queensland for damaging winds and large hailstones.

The warning, issued at 4.20pm, is current for people in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Logan as well as parts of Moreton Bay, Ipswich, the Southern Downs, Scenic Rim, Somerset, Toowoomba and Redlands.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:25 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Redbank Plains, Wacol, Highvale, the D'Aguilar Ranges, Greenbank and Tallebudgera. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast. They are forecast to affect Coolangatta, Archerfield, Enoggera Reservoir and Samford by 4:55 pm and Brisbane CBD, Beenleigh, Logan City and Dayboro by 5:25 pm.

Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

  • Move your car under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure loose outdoor items.
  • Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
  • Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
  • Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
  • For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:20 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
