Man killed just months away from his wedding day

THE third fatal car crash on Ipswich roads in less than a week has left another family devastated.

Ben Sturdy, 34, died when his Toyota HiLux crashed into a power pole after veering off the Brisbane Valley Hwy at Fairney View, just before midnight on Sunday.

The Fernvale man has left behind his partner of three years, Julie Pozvek, who said she was grieving the loss of a "great guy".

The pair was engaged to be married early next year, and Mr Sturdy was also Ms Pozvek's carer.

"He was a good guy; he was awesome. Everyone loved him and we are all very sad for him," Ms Pozvek said.

Mr Sturdy had lived in the Ipswich area for about five years after moving down from Mackay, where most of his family still resides.

Ms Pozvek said he had worked several jobs recently but had been taking time off after sustaining injuries in a work-related accident.

He was about to turn 35.

The couple's red cattle dog Dorky was in the vehicle with Mr Sturdy at the time and somehow survived the crash - running away from the scene when the vehicle caught fire, but then returning later when the fire went out.

The dog was returned to Ms Pozvek yesterday.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and are still unable to comment on why the HiLux left the road, about 5km south of the Fernvale township.

Mr Sturdy was thrown from the vehicle and was believed to have died instantly.

Police said the impact brought down powerlines, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

It was the third tragedy on roads in the Ipswich district in four days, following the deaths of Riverview man Scott McKlaren on Friday morning and Ronald Griffin, 61, of Ingoldsby, on Thursday.

A 22-year-old man remains in a critical condition following the crash that killed Mr McKlaren at Flinders View.

The Ipswich forensic crash unit is investigating all three fatalities.
