The Waves rise to another Cup final
FOOTBALL: In the pressure of a cup semi-final, The Waves delivered when it counted.
The three-time defending champions of the NewsMail Cup are back in the decider after beating Brothers Aston Villa 3-1 on Tuesday night.
A double to Alex Keen and one goal to Sam Meyer gave the side its first win of the season against Villa.
"It was our best game of the year," The Waves coach Jason De Papi said.
"We controlled the game for 75 minutes and really stuck it to them."
De Papi said the side handled the pressure well.
"The squad really steps it up in finals," he said.
"They had a professional approach and left no stone unturned.
"Our defence was outstanding as well."
For Villa it was a disappointing night.
"The first half was ordinary and our man marking was atrocious," Villa coach Glen Sparozvich said.
"Some of our players are out of form at the moment."
The side will now prepare to take on Bingera, who also qualified for the NewsMail Cup final with a dramatic 6-1 win over Bargara.
Bingera is now in its first final since 2014 after scoring four second half goals.
"We're very happy with the performance and it's been a while since we made the final," Bingera coach Brett Kitching said.
"Any final we make is a great achievement for the club."
The only negative for the side was two red cards to Bingera's Corey Haack and Jason McEwan, with both now likely to miss the final.
Bargara also had two players sent off as coach Allan Davison said the opposition was too quick and too football smart for them.
Bingera will face The Waves in the final on July 15.
