The Sharks are circling the rest of the NDRL

A WEEK ago South Kolan and Avondale staked their claims for places in the Northern Districts Rugby League grand final.

But after 80 minutes of rugby league in Miriam Vale it looks like it won't matter which team South Kolan plays to try and win back-to-back titles.

With every club retiring the number eight jersey for the weekend in memory of James Ackerman, who died from injuries suffered in game last weekend, the mood was sombre to start with.

South Kolan changed the crowd's mood when it belted Avondale 52-16 in the 10 tries to three romp, and the Tigers will have plenty of mental scars to try and heal before the finals start in August.

The Tigers were under-manned but the Sharks were ruthless and took no short cuts in the comprehensive victory. Feingaola Blake was in scintillating form and scored three tires and kicked five goals to ensure the Tigers had a tough day out.

In the opening game of the round, Agnes Water defeated Burnett Heads 46-31 with Jason Sykes crossing the line twice.

While in the main game Miriam Vale flogged an under-strength Gin Gin 94-12.

In his last game on home soil, Glenn Cox scored a try and kicked a goal in the memorable afternoon.

Despite the easy nature of the win, Miriam Vale's Aaron Causton had praise only for the Hawks who travelled with just enough players to contest the game.

It could have been a disaster for the hosts if Gin Gin forfeited, but the Hawks stuck at it and played the game out.

The week 12 games will be played at Agnes Water on Sunday and the Marlins play Avondale in the main game at 3pm.

It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can recover from the loss to South Kolan and a win is vital for Avondale's hopes to claim the minor premiership.

South Kolan plays Gin Gin and if current form continues it could be an easy affair.
