Mayor stands by offer to re-home 500 refugee families
STANDING firm by his earlier offer, Western Downs mayor Ray Brown said the communities of the region are able to share their land and communities with up to 500 families from the Middle East.
"We've as yet had no dialogue to take it any further, but there's been an enormous amount of private offers - right through to real estate organisations, who've bent over backwards to try and assist," Cr Brown said.
The offer was originally made in September, prompting an online backlash 77% of responding Dalby Herald readers.
Cr Brown asserted that this number did not represent the wider community.
"I believe that statistic is wrong," he said.
"I have not had one person face to face come up to me and complain about accepting refugees."
"You ask a business house to put a sign up, saying 'no refugees here', and see how the clientele react."
Cr Brown went on to state that 160 houses had been offered for resettlement, not including online advertisements.
