Major employment boost needed to tackle NBN

THE national broadband network needs 4500 more workers.

The company building the network, NBN (formerly NBN Co), has launched a campaign encouraging school students to take up jobs in the telecommunications industry.

In a statement, NBN said the numbers of line workers and telecommunication copper cable jointers were "well below what is needed" to build and maintain the network.

NBN chief Bill Morrow said about 850 more workers were needed in Queensland alone.

"It is absolutely vital that we have enough people to construct the network as we increase the pace of the rollout," he said.

A large proportion of the workforce is due to retire in about five years.

"We would be potentially staring down the barrel of a telecommunications skills shortage," he said.
