The Jezabels take the world by storm

FEW Australian bands have enjoyed the debut chart success of indie darlings The Jezabels.

The Sydney band's debut album Prisoner shot to Number 2 on the ARIA albums chart in September, following on from the hype built by the band's unconventional EP trilogy.

After playing the local stage at the 2009 Sydney Big Day Out, they have graduated to the full festival bill this year alongside Kanye West, Soundgarden, My Chemical Romance and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.

"We're so happy we're actually part of a full-on touring experience," said guitarist Samuel Lockwood.

"Big Day Out's probably the biggest name festival in Australia."

With a packed show at Splendour in the Grass under its belt, the band now has a better handle on playing large festival shows.

"You start out playing pubs and clubs and you think you can do the same show but you have to change the whole mindset," Lockwood said.

"People want to see something special. We're playing in the daytime (at Big Day Out) so we're going to try to think of a few cool things just to make it look nice.

"It's harder ... you sort of feel very alone on those big stages."

The four-piece, fronted by enigmatic singer Hayley Mary, sidestepped the usual recording process by releasing three related EPs - The Man Is Dead, She's So Hard and Dark Storm - in 2009 and 2010, with the final instalment Dark Storm topping the Australian iTunes albums chart.

So while it's no surprise to fans and critics that their debut full-length release was also a hit, the band remained cautiously optimistic.

"We're just so stoked in the first week it went to No 2 and it just (recently) went gold," Lockwood said.

"We just can't believe any of it. We definitely were hoping for this, but you can't really envisage it when you're writing your first album what can happen."

The band has started making inroads in the US, but their strongest overseas following is in the UK.

After Big Day Out they will be flying to London to perform at the NME Awards Show.

The Big Day Out plays the Gold Coast Parklands on January 22. Tickets available through Ticketmaster.
