The great wall of Noosa? Council plan to thwart development

NOOSA Council says it is prepared to build a "substantial" fence to prevent its carpark land being used as access to a proposed shopping complex at Peregian Beach.

In the symbolic planning version of the Berlin Wall, the new administration has sent a message to developers that it will not be party to what it sees as inappropriate development.

Multi Span Australia, which is building the shopping complex at the old Peregian Beach Bowls Club site, has previously asked the Sunshine Coast Council to make the Peregian Beach Community House car park land available to allow access via David Low Way.

But Noosa Mayor Noel Playford has led a Noosa Council charge to quash the idea.

The company will be told Noosa "will not allow access through the car park for pedestrians and vehicles".

"If necessary, council will erect a substantial fence on the boundary of the land to prevent such access," Cr Playford said in a mayoral minute to last week's council meeting.

"I'm moving this because, as you know, this matter is subject to a court appeal, '' he said.

"It appears that the people on the appellant's side are looking at using the possibility of council's car park in their arguments.

"Legal advice is that it would be appropriate to make it perfectly clear that they cannot use our public car park for their business and for their application."

The council also voted to refuse the Coles Noosa Junction development application, which includes converting Noosa Heads Bowls Club into a tavern and building a liquor barn next door.
