A WOMAN on the Thai tourist island of Koh Samui has been forced to bow before the late king's portrait for criticising the royal family in social media comments.

A video posted online shows the arrested woman being forced to kneel and bow in front of a picture on her way in and out of the police station as a large crowd of onlookers jeer.

She has been charged with insulting the royal family.

Under Thai law, anyone who "defames, insults or threatens” the king, the queen, the heir-apparent or the regent will be punished with up to 15 years in prison.
