Teen prodigy set for Shield debut

VICTORIAN prodigy Will Pucovski will make his first-class debut against New South Wales at the MCG on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old will bat at No.5 for the Bushrangers following a prolific couple of months.

He notched four centuries and averaged 162.50 in the national under-19 championships in December and has 435 premier firsts runs at 108.75 for Melbourne Cricket Club this season.

He also made an unbeaten 87 off just 59 balls in an exhibition T20 for the Gilchrist XII against the Ricky Ponting XII at the SCG in late December.

The match pitted the best young players in the country against each other and Pucovski was the standout performer.

Currently uncontracted, the right-handed batsman made 43 and 10 in a Futures League match last week against a NSW attack boasting Trent Copeland, Steve O'Keefe and Gurinder Sandhu.

The Bushrangers currently sit at the top of the Sheffield Shield ladder, while NSW is fourth.

Cameron White will skipper the team, while veteran batsman Rob Quiney has been named in the squad and is a chance to play his first Shield game of the season.
