Radio host bags award at Tamworth
A TRIP to Tamworth for the nation’s premier country music festival delivered a pleasant surprise for Bundaberg radio announcer Larry Cann.
Mr Cann went to the Tamworth Country Music Festival and came back to Bundaberg carrying two awards that had been voted on by country music fans across the nation.
The Australian Country Music People’s Choice awards were awarded for most popular radio program and most popular country music DJ.
Mr Cann found himself rubbing shoulders with the nation’s country music royalty at the awards ceremony last week.
Australian country music superstars including Troy Cassar-Daley and Melinda Schneider also picked up awards at the ceremony.
The winners were announced last Tuesday evening at a special ceremony in Tamworth.
“What is very special to me is the fact these awards were voted on by the people who listen to the station and by country music fans,” Mr Cann said.
“The fact these are national awards is quite humbling, and to be recognised in Tamworth is very special.”
Mr Cann presents the station’s breakfast show every weekday morning, and once a week he puts together the KIX FM Hot Country Top 20 show.
He is originally from Chinchilla, and moved to Bundaberg to take up a position at KIX FM in 2001.
Mr Cann said getting the awards was a surprise.
“I have always said I would never nominate myself for an award, so to have the nomination come in from somebody else was really special,” he said.
The two trophies now occupy pride of place in the foyer of the radio station’s headquarters in Bundaberg.
