Dowling only Talisman Sabre protester to plead not guilty

1.10pm: "PEACE Pilgrim" James Dowling who was charged for trespass on Commonwealth property after leading an anti-war demonstration at Shoalwater Bay military base in July appeared in Rockhampton Magistrates Court this morning.

Of 15 activists charged in July, Dowling is the only defendant who has not pleaded guilty.

The other activists are engaged in a District Court appeal against the confiscation of their possessions.

The case was adjourned until 2pm.

7.40am: ONE of 15 people arrested in July for trespass on Shoalwater Bay military base Jim Dowling, will appear in Rockhamtpon court today.

At an earlier court mention in September, which Dowling did not attend in person, Magistrate O"Driscoll expressed anger at Dowling for having his bail conditions revoked in a Brisbane court.

Dowling, from Brisbane, claimed the conditions, stopping him from associating with fellow peace activists, were extreme and meant to punish him before any conviction.

Other activists who pleaded guilty at the time of their arrests are presently engaged in a District Court appeal against the confiscation of most of their possessions that they took into the Shoalwater training area.

October 2 marked the International Day of Nonviolence and the 146th Birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

"I couldn't think of a more appropriate time to appear in court," Mr. Dowling said.

"As the world reels form a refugee crisis, much of the blame lies with the US wars in the Middle East. We were arrested in July for opposing those wars, and all war. The International Day of Nonviolence has reminded us, as Gandhi did, that there is an alternative to war. Nonviolence is that alternative."
