Boy in Sydney charged with planning terrorism

A SYDNEY teenager has been charged with allegedly planning a terrorist act after police were alerted to a number of posts made on social media.

The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team arrested the 17-year-old boy at his home at The Oaks and charged him at Camden Police Station at midnight last night.

He has been charged with one count of preparation for or planning a terrorist act, for which the maximum penalty is a 25-year jail sentence.

He was also charged with using a telecommunications network with intention to commit a serious offence.

The youth was bail refused and will appear at a Children's Court today.

Police said there was no threat to the community.

The matter was unrelated to any previous investigation carried out by the NSW.

More to come.
