Swimmers smash records at City Of Charm meet

FOUR of Bundaberg's best young swimmers were crowned age champions and three were runners-up at the recent City of Charm swim meet at Fairymead Pool.

Along with the age champion awards, numerous records were broken while others held by local swimmers survived the test of time.

Kyle Rethamel took home four meet records and the 15 years age champion award. His records came in the 200m freestyle (2:07.09) and butterfly (2:11.97) and these were added to the three he held that could not be broken.

Australian champion Macson Cottle was pipped for the 10 years boys' champion by Troy Carlson but he also set two new records 100m - (1:28.50) and 200m (3:10.89).

The other record-breakers from Fairymead Swimming Club were Indy Burt and Isaac Cooper. Indy won the 11 years 200m backstroke (2:42.77) and Isaac the eight years 200m freestyle (2:56.39).

Along with his record-breaking swim Isaac claimed the eight years boy's championship.

Paris Bell was the 10 years girls' runner-up and Zac Swift the 14 years boys' champion, while Matthew Davis was the runner-up in the 16 years and over division.

Natasha Walden who was still on a high from fantastic performances at the New Zealand short-course meet in September, claimed the under-13 girls' age champion, and she also set a new meet record in the 13 years 200m breaststroke in an excellent time of 2:52.80.

Along with the individual success there were two relay records broken by Bundaberg swimmers.

Zac, Macson, Kyle and Cody Simms combined in both the mixed 200m medley and freestyle relays to set new marks for others to aim for.

In the medley relay their time was 2:08.42, while the time for the freestyle relay was 2:01.14.

The champion swimmers' next meeting is this weekend at the Queensland titles in Brisbane.
