Bear Grylls' save makes gran famous
WAVES of media interest have swamped Christine McLaren with the same force as the torrent that washed her car off Goodwood Road on Sunday.
Since Tuesday’s NewsMail account of Ms McLaren’s two-and-a-half-hour ordeal and rescue, she has been the centre of interstate and international media frenzy.
However, the spotlight has been on her use of advice she remembered from a Bear Grylls documentary that helped her scramble from her rapidly submerging vehicle.
But the grandmother of seven is embarrassed by all the attention, which she believes should focus on Ray Lilley and Dave Haimes — the fishing mates who braved the flood to pluck her from trees to which she was clinging.
It started yesterday with an interview on Sydney morning radio program, 2Day FM with Kyle and Jackie O, during which they surprised her with a chat with Mr Grylls himself.
The NewsMail article was also one of the top read stories on the news.com.au website, while further interest was also received from a British website. The Weekend Sunday television program and national magazines Woman’s Day and Take 5 have also shown interest.
