Price of sugar on the rise

SWEET tooths should expect a bitter surprise in coming months as the increase in sugar prices begins to affect processed foods.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council has revealed the price of soft drinks, sweet biscuits, flavoured milk, jams and ice-cream topping would be just a few sweet products to go up in price.

The council said the price of a 200g packet of lollies could rise by up to 15 cents and a 2kg packet of CSR sugar could rise by up to 80 cents.

While manufacturers are trying to absorb some of the 25% sugar price increase, they cannot take it all.

Some manufacturers are also looking at ways to swap sugar for natural sweeteners.

Others are attempting to improve the efficiency of their manufacturing process to reduce costs.

While some of these rises have already hit our shelves in packet sugar, it is unknown when the high prices will begin to affect processed sugar foods.

Some of the products to increase in price include:

Chocolate

Lollies

Juice

Jams

Sweet biscuits

Flavoured milk
