Stitched up, DJ itching to return after dog attack

SORE, bruised and battered, DJ the police dog still manages to wag his tail after a vicious dog attack while on duty.

The german shepherd will be resting for the next few weeks after two dogs latched on to his front paws during a routine police warrant search at Mooloolaba on Wednesday night.

DJ is sporting a less than convenient plastic cone collar to prevent him from pulling the line of stitches mending together about 10cm of torn muscle and skin on his front elbow area.

The pooch, who joined the Sunshine Coast police in December, is back home with his handler Senior Constable Justyn Mergard and is itching to get back to work.

Police say when dogs DJ, Oakley and Ajax along with their handlers and other officers arrived to execute a drug-related search warrant, two dogs, believed to be American staffies, latched on to DJ's paws.

It took several police, capsicum spray and a front yard scuffle to prise the two dogs off DJ.

More serious injuries could have cost DJ his career and the Queensland Police Force a valuable asset.

"DJ is a young dog and junior in his service so he hasn't even reached his full potential yet," Snr Cst Mergard said.

"I feel completely responsible for all this.

"He is my partner day-in and day-out and he's there to look after me."
