Gilmore tells of 'random' attack

WORLD surfing star Stephanie Gilmore has vowed to be back in the water in six weeks.

The four-time world champion has laughed off a fractured wrist suffered when she was attacked with a metal bar at her Tweed Heads unit on Monday night.

Miss Gilmore said she was shaken by the attack but the support of great friends had helped her through the ordeal.

“It was really scary,” she said.

“I travel the world, and go to so many different places, and the one place you think that you’re safe, something like this happen.

“I’m really lucky I’ve got the best friends in the world.

“My family and my friends have supported me my whole life, it’s awesome to know they are here for me.”

The surfer, with the nickname “Happy”, said she was glad the attack had not happened to somebody less able to defend themselves.

“It was just a random act,” Miss Gilmore said.

“In a way I am kind of glad it was me and I was able to protect myself well enough.

“Hopefully we will get some justice.”

Miss Gilmore’s father, Jeff, said his daughter’s friends had really pulled through for her.

“She already understands she’s a lucky girl,” he said.

“She’s got all her mates hanging around her, they had a big sleepover last night.”

Miss Gilmore also sounded a note of caution for others.

"Just think twice about where you are going and who you are with, there’s some strange people in the world, so just be careful," she said.

Surfing’s golden girl admits she would find it tough to keep out of the water, but expected to be back in top form for the 2011 Roxy Pro Gold Coast in February.

Police have charged a 26-year-old Kirra man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will reappear in Tweed Heads Local Court on January 10.
