Stephanie Gilmore bashed

FOUR-TIME world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore has been savagely beaten with a metal pole.

New South Wales Police confirmed an attack took place about 9.30pm last night, when a 22-year-old woman was walking to her unit on Hill Street in Tweed Heads when she was attacked.

It is  understood Ms Gilmore received a laceration to the back of the head, a fractured wrist and lacerations to her hand and was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital for treatment, and has since been discharged.

Tweed Daily News surfscene columnist Andrew McKinnon said the attack highlighted violence issues in the Tweed.

“The attack would have been pretty unnerving,” he said.

“She has been living there for four years and it points to the unsavoury element in the Tweed.

NSW police said a man was detained by friends and neighbours of the assault victim and then arrested by police.

They said a man had been charged with offences including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
